Introduction

Climate 2.0 is a series of informal conversations under the ClimaComms initiative by SLYCAN Trust, designed to foster holistic discussions on pressing environmental topics. By bringing together diverse individuals, from those deeply engaged in climate action to professionals across various fields, it aims to cultivate a collaborative approach to tackling climate challenges and ensure a more inclusive and comprehensive dialogue on our shared future.

This iteration of Climate 2.0 convenes at a pivotal moment. The year 2024 saw substantial financial impacts from climate-related disasters, with ten events each incurring over $4 billion in insured damages. While this highlights a significant financial burden for insured losses, these figures only represent a segment of the overall costs. They do not fully encompass the profound human, environmental, and uninsured economic losses, much of which disproportionately affects communities and regions that have contributed minimally to the climate crisis.

As the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) begins its operational phase and anticipates disbursing its initial funds, important questions emerge: Will these efforts be adequate in a global landscape facing evolving solidarity and budgetary considerations for climate and humanitarian initiatives?

Objectives

  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues on critical aspects of climate finance and its implications.
  • Enhance understanding of the FRLD's operationalisation and its direct access modalities under the Barbados Implementation Modalities (BIM)
  • Identify and explore the challenges associated with accessing funds for loss and damage
  • Envision the characteristics of an effective national system for loss and damage, including the vital contributions of subnational and local actors
