Climate change is among the key threats the world is facing today. Addressing climate-induced loss and damage (L&D) is a key aspect of climate risk management and finance as well as a burden currently borne by many climate-vulnerable developing countries, including Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has focused on the thematic area of climate-induced L&D through policy and action, with the primary contribution being from public finance. In the lead-up to the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which will take place in November/December 2023, Parties are focused on identifying approaches and solutions for addressing priority needs, better implement solutions, and mobilise means of implementation, including technical support for building long-term resilience to climate risks.
This event aims to identify gaps and needs related to addressing climate-induced loss and damage while building on existing policy processes and action programs. It also focuses on risk management, risk finance, and risk transfer to both national and global processes.
Participation in the event will be limited to 40 non-governmental stakeholders representing diverse sectors, selected through an application process and nominations directed by the leaders of the invited institutions in Sri Lanka. Prospective participants will be mandated to provide input on Loss and Damage (L&D) within the context of their organisations.
