Although the SDGs are built on the experience and lessons learned from the Millennium Development Goals, the scope of the 2030 agenda is far broader than the MDGs. The 2030 Agenda provides a framework for collective action to be implemented by all countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership.

One critical element for success is the localization - the process of identifying, adapting, implementing and monitoring the SDGs at the national and sub-national levels - of SDGs, through which the national interests, priorities and particular circumstances are taken into account when mainstreaming SDGs at all governance levels and relevant sectors and fields.
