Climate change is a defining global challenge for the 21stcentury and acts as a threat multiplier to planetary and human systems. Extremeevents, long-term climatic changes, and environmental degradation impactsecurity in complex ways and across sectors. These impacts manifest in highlycontext-specific ways based on geographic and socio-economic factors, but theycan also lead to cascading consequences that contribute to regional and globalinsecurity or fragility. Therefore, it is imperative to address thesecurity-climate nexus at national and regional as well as global level, including through multilateral processes and frameworks.

Integrating policy and planning processes on security andclimate change offers several strategic opportunities to bridge silos or avoidnegative feedback loops and trade-offs. However, the complexity of the nexusand its internal and external dynamics require deep knowledge of relevantthematic areas and cross-cutting aspects, such as finance, technology, andinnovation. SLYCAN Trust’s work programme on security, climate change, andenvironment seeks to contribute to a holistic and evidence-based understandingof the nexus, identify priority gaps to be addressed, and explore solutionsthat unlock synergies in the context of multilateral and regional policyprocesses.
