Every year on August 12th, International Youth Day reminds us of the incredible power and potential of young people worldwide. At SLYCAN Trust, we firmly believe that youth are at the forefront of change, especially in the battle against climate change. In 2024, we are not just celebrating our past achievements but also recognising how digital technology has enabled us to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13: Climate Action. From policy discussions to grassroots campaigns, our generation has harnessed the power of digital media to disseminate vital information and address global challenges with creativity and determination. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” perfectly encapsulates our ongoing efforts to drive meaningful change.

Social Media Sparks Youth Action

Social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have revolutionized the way information is shared, making it fast, engaging, and accessible. These platforms have been pivotal in raising awareness and inspiring action on critical issues such as climate change, plastic pollution, and deforestation. For instance, recent TikTok campaigns have vividly illustrated the impact of plastic waste on marine life, capturing the attention of thousands of young people and motivating them to take action. At SLYCAN Trust Youth, we leverage our Instagram and Facebook channels to provide easily digestible content, from simplified articles on policy negotiations and research findings to engaging videos and informative newsletters about climate action. Our goal is to keep you informed and empowered with the latest updates and resources.

Empowering Youth Through Digital Innovation

The rise of digital media has given young entrepreneurs a platform to turn their passions into impactful actions. Take, for example, EcoTrack, an innovative app designed to help individuals track their carbon footprints. At SLYCAN Trust, we are committed to equipping youth with the skills they need to make a difference. Through web conferencing platforms like Zoom, we connect innovators and young leaders from around the world. Our Global Youth Forum webinars offer a dynamic space for learning and sharing across various fields, including fashion, sustainability, entrepreneurship, food systems, and risk management. By bringing together over 1,000 young people, SLYCAN Trust Youth empowers them with the knowledge and tools to combat climate change. Today, we celebrate their achievements and the collective progress we've made toward a more sustainable future!

Enhancing Communication for Collaboration

Despite advancements in digital connectivity, a significant digital divide persists, with 2.2 billion young people still lacking internet access at home, according to UNICEF. Youth-led initiatives like Code for Africa are working tirelessly to bridge this gap through community Wi-Fi hotspots and digital literacy programs. However, another critical gap remains: access to climate-related information. Through Climacomms, an initiative of SLYCAN Trust, we are dedicated to closing this gap by enhancing climate communication skills. Our monthly Climate 2.0 updates keep youth informed about the latest climate developments and demonstrate how effective communication can empower young people and drive global climate action.

As we celebrate International Youth Day and honour the efforts of young people worldwide, let’s reflect on how we can use digital tools in our daily lives to contribute to the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Whether it’s launching a social media campaign on Instagram or TikTok, developing a tech solution, or joining a local initiative—remember, every action counts!
